We all want to be noticed and if you are taking the time to read this you agree with me.
No one is forcing us to do anything in life. We either want to do it or we don’t. This is so true because we all have it to decide whether something is important or not. Funny how easily we get to an aha moment where we conclude, “I’ve got this! But, we have forgotten a very important lesson: how does it look from the other side…? Do you know what others see and are you aware of it? I don’t know about you, but there is one lie that I believe we need to debunk for good. It is so cliché to hear people say: I don’t care what you say or think about me. It is a lie! Every time we tell ourselves that we don’t care, we are only making the situation worst. The fact is, everybody cares about what others say or think about them. If you don’t believe me, then check out Facebook, Instagram, Google+, YouTube and the list goes on. We are so obsessed with what people say and think about us. That’s why we all want followers, right? Right! This is the idea of looking from the other side. For us to get clarity and find our purpose we need to take the time to listen and learn from what others say about us.
A good friend shared with me an interesting way to visualize things from the other side. My friend relates his ritual of periodically cleaning up the office – especially at the end of the year. He would go and sit in one of the chairs of his clients. For some time, he sits there and looks at everything in the room. You might be thinking, how absurd is that! Why would someone want to just sit there and look at his office desk, walls, etc.? But, there is a very important reason for doing this. He can identify what needs to change on his desk, identify cobwebs (lol!) or just some old stuff that had gotten overlooked. This is what you call the view from the other side. Interesting isn’t? Try it if you have an office, you might be surprised what you find.
On the surface, what my friend does might look very mundane, but there is a bigger picture. This is what I call focusing on you from the other side. When you communicate with others, working on a team or even just walking down the street what do other people see from the other side? Do they see someone with a purpose and a vision? Do they see someone who understands the value of making connections? Are you approachable? If there is any inkling that you are not attracting the universe, you have a problem. This is not something that an online social network can resolve. You must step from behind your “desk” and look from the other side. What do you see and how can you begin the change? Communicate to connect!
I have come to realize how important it is for us to recognize when we are failing to connect. If you are interested in this journey to change what others see “from the other side”, then join me in doing the following:
- Begin to smile more. Make your smile be the first thing that some connects with. I believe I smile in my sleep.
- Look people in the face when you are speaking with them. You command the space and they respect that.
- Be spontaneous in meeting new people, you would be surprised how they could inspire you or vice versa. Just say something random. Be nice. Make it a lasting connection.
Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. – Romans 12:16
