There is something amazing about making someone’s day. It could be through a smile, a kind word or deed. In a world, that is so caught up in “self”, we are gradually losing the ability to connect with each other. We are slowly eroding the significant principle of serving others. I want to encourage you to get ready to serve. We need more people to take a moment to give a little and share a little. This is not something that we can put off for later, it requires immediate action.
“Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
The words of Martin Luther King, Jr. resonates today with anyone who believes in the philosophy that we are all one. We cannot hear his words enough. He selfishly led in his time. He took the action to serve. There are many other leaders current and past who have decided they will act. They refused to let the world around them fade into oblivion. They chose to serve!
I myself have come to realize the importance of serving others. This is mostly connected to my faith in Christ Jesus, but I am also influenced by those who I see doing the same. As I continue my development as a leader, I first see myself as a servant. When we come to the place where we know that to serve is real gain, everything else fits into its rightful position. All it takes is to see a need and willing to give of oneself. The beauty in life is not that we win, but, it lies in the ability to share and give to grow. We cannot be focused only on the now, because when then comes; we would not have much to look back on as we seek to find the contentment from the joys we brought to someone who did not have the courage to live.
“Service is the measure of greatness; it always has been true; it is true today, and it always will be true, that he is greatest who does the most of good. Nearly all of our controversies and combats grow out of the fact that we are trying to get something from each other–there will be peace when our aim is to do something for each other. The human measure of a human life is its income; the divine measure of a life is its outgo, its overflow–its contribution to the welfare of all.” ~ William Jennings Bryan
Today you and I have the chance to change the game. We can serve to live and live to serve. Join me on this journey to discover how we can take the lid off how we serve and embrace life differently. Let us see our job, communities, home and country as the place we can serve. The place that we will serve! Here are a few things to consider as you employ this uplifting perspective:
- Serve with passion. Give it your 100% – nothing more, nothing less.
- Surround yourself with like-minded people. To be effect in your ability to serve, you must have a circle of influence that encourages you to do more.
- Serve with gratitude. Appreciate who you serve and do it so they know it is coming from a willing heart.
- Serve as unto the Lord. The greatest service that man received was the gift of God’s love when he sent His son.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. ~ John 3:16
